SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test)

The [translate:Scholastic Assessment Test] (SAT) is a paper-based standardized test that measures a student’s readiness for college by evaluating skills gained during high school.

It is widely accepted by universities across the USA, Canada, the UK, and several other countries for undergraduate admissions.

The SAT primarily assesses a student’s ability to read, write, and apply mathematical concepts through real-world problems.

The test is divided into two main sections — Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) and Mathematics, each scored between 200–800.

The optional Essay section evaluates analytical writing skills and is required by certain universities for admission.

The total exam duration is 3 hours, while the SAT with Essay takes approximately 3 hours and 50 minutes.

General Structure of the SAT Exam

  • Two main sections – Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) and Math.
  • Both sections are designed to assess skills relevant to high school learning and university readiness.
  • EBRW questions are multiple-choice, testing comprehension, reasoning, and vocabulary in context.
  • Math is divided into two parts: one allowing calculator use and one without a calculator.
  • The exam includes multiple-choice and grid-in questions, where students must calculate and fill in their answers.
  • Time limits: 100 minutes for EBRW, 80 minutes for Math.

SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW)

Consists of 52 multiple-choice questions across 5 reading passages, completed in 65 minutes.

Includes one literary passage from American or international fiction, plus passages from U.S. founding documents or texts related to global issues such as freedom, justice, and equality.

Contains passages from economics, psychology, sociology, or scientific studies.

Students must interpret information, evaluate arguments, and analyze tone and structure in the given texts.

Writing and Language Test

Comprises 44 multiple-choice questions over 4 passages, with a time limit of 35 minutes.

Tests grammar, sentence structure, and clarity of expression.

Focus areas span topics from career, science, humanities, and social studies.

Questions are designed to help students revise, edit, and improve passages.

  • Narrative – storytelling or personal account
  • Argumentative – persuasive writing
  • Informative/Explanatory – fact-based or descriptive content

SAT Mathematics Section

The Math section is divided into two parts: Calculator and No Calculator.

  • Total of 58 questions to be solved in 80 minutes.
  • Around 80% are multiple-choice, and 20% are grid-in questions requiring direct answers.
  • Calculator section: 30 multiple-choice and 8 grid-in questions.
  • Non-calculator section: 15 multiple-choice and 5 grid-in questions.
  • A list of formulas and reference information is provided at the start of the test.
  • Emphasis is placed on algebra, problem-solving, data analysis, geometry, and trigonometry.

SAT Essay (Optional)

The Essay section is optional but required by many top universities to evaluate writing and analytical skills.

It must be completed in 50 minutes and is based on analyzing a given passage.

Students assess how the author uses evidence, reasoning, and persuasion to build arguments.

Three separate scores are awarded from 2 to 8 for Reading, Analysis, and Writing.

  • Reading – Comprehending the passage and key arguments.
  • Analysis – Evaluating the author’s evidence and logic.
  • Writing – Crafting a structured, grammatically accurate response.
